An African Community University in Germany

The Africa Institute of Dortmund is an African community university based in Germany, dedicated to training, research, and information on African realities. It serves as a center for reflection and innovation, fostering a deeper understanding of the cultural, economic, and social dynamics of the African continent.
The institute was founded under the initiative of EXELL Afrika e.V., an African excellence association established in 2010 by the African diaspora in the Ruhr region of Germany. This initiative was driven by the need to provide the African diaspora with a capacity-building tool, empowering them both culturally, academically, and economically, to foster their integration in Germany and contribute to Africa’s sustainable development.

Our activities are structured around several key pillars:

• Academic and economic cooperation between Germany and Africa: By facilitating the exchange of expertise, innovations, and best practices, we build bridges between the two continents.
• Empowerment of women and children: Education and training serve as fundamental pillars to strengthen their autonomy and integration into society.
• ⁠Integration of Africans and other foreign communities in Germany: Through training programs, mentoring, and intercultural events, we promote harmonious coexistence based on mutual understanding and professional inclusion.

An Academic Platform and Research Center on Africa
Since 2020, the institute has expanded its scope to become an academic and scientific platform focusing on:

• African history and the African diaspora: A major part of our mission is to document and share African narratives, shedding light on the contributions of Africans to global history.
• The economy and development of the African continent: Through research and training, we analyze contemporary economic challenges and strategies for Africa’s endogenous and sustainable development.
• African knowledge and philosophical traditions: We educate on Africanology, Pan-Africanism, Kemetism, and African intellectual traditions, deconstructing prejudices and promoting ancestral African knowledge within a scientific framework.

An Academic Bridge Between Africa and Germany
The institute is led by African experts, graduates of German universities, committed to creating a structured academic framework that connects Germany and Africa. Understanding the crucial role of education in development, we have developed an online campus in partnership with several African and German universities, offering certified programs in key disciplines.
In 2022, a strategic partnership with Wilhelm Anton University enabled the institute to offer certified and degree programs, strengthening its status as a true academy of « African Know-How Made in Germany ». Through this initiative, we contribute to training a new generation of African experts, equipped to tackle the continent’s contemporary challenges.
Today, the Africa Institute of Dortmund actively participates in training and education programs across more than 10 African countries, focusing on key sectors such as:

• Information technology and digital transformation,
• Medical sciences and public health,
• Social sciences and governance,
• Renewable energy and ecological transition.

A Strong Commitment to Education and Youth Empowerment
Beyond academic training, the institute plays a crucial role in supporting young Africans through its NGO dedicated to education in Africa and within the diaspora. Believing that education is the engine of development, we work to make knowledge accessible to all, with a special focus on:

• Continuous training and professional reconversion: Helping Africans adapt to evolving job markets.
• Supporting African entrepreneurship: Providing training in business management, innovation, and fundraising for young entrepreneurs.
• Promoting African scientific and intellectual heritage: Ensuring the preservation and dissemination of Africa’s rich knowledge base.
